The briolette-cut, 95 carat, yellow Walska diamond is one of the mysteries of the diamond world. The stone was set in a bird-motif brooch/pendant by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1971, in which the wings can be detached to become earrings. The Walska diamond extends from the beak as a pendant or with the tail as a brooch. The brooch and diamond are now privately owned. That is the sum total of what is known about this magnificent diamond.
Ganna Walska (1887-1984), after who the diamond was named, was a Polish opera singer and avid gardener. She created Lotusland, a 37-acre estate and botanical garden east of Santa Barbara, California. She also established before her passing the non-profit Ganna Walska Lotusland Foundation, which now preserves this botanical treasure.
