Queen Elizabeth’s 65th “Sapphire” Anniversary

Many people find themselves fascinated with Great Britain’s royal family. Perhaps it’s because they are among the very few monarchies of a thriving, Western country or maybe it’s due to how the family has become much easier to identify with than in the past. While the younger generation is drawn by the beauty and down-to-earth qualities displayed by William and Kate, the older generations as well as the younger ones remain in awe of Queen Elizabeth II, who took the throne at such a young age. In fact, the premature death of her father 65 years ago is what has just crowned her with a record-breaking reign. Though the record had already been broken this past September, the Queen has now reached her 65th anniversary, something never before achieved by a British monarch. The 65th anniversary is known as the sapphire anniversary, which is why the Queen was photographed wearing a stunning set of sapphire earrings and a necklace given to her by her father in honor of her wedding.

65th Anniversary

This monumental occasion is quite bittersweet for the Queen as it also marks the death of her father who died at such a young age. That is why, year after year, Queen Elizabeth chooses to spend the day alone, away from the public and the cameras. Still, this anniversary is very significant as it makes her the longest reigning monarch of Britain. In order to celebrate this important celebration Buckingham Palace chose to commission a photograph showcasing the Queen wearing her stunning sapphire jewelry.

The Photo

David Bailey, a British Photographer, captured the historic image of Queen Elizabeth posing while dripping in gemstones. The light blue embellished getup that she wore complemented the large drop diamond and sapphire earrings and diamond and sapphire necklace perfectly.

The Sapphires

In order to properly commemorate the Queen’s 65th “sapphire” anniversary as Britain’s monarch it was fitting to adorn her in sapphire jewels, which were given to her by her beloved father. The matching earrings and necklace include many large deep blue sapphires as well as countless diamonds. Keeping up well with the trends of adorning remarkable gemstone jewelry, the 90-year-old queen sure knows how to pull these sapphire jewelry pieces off. Sapphires are one of the four precious gemstones, which also include diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. The royal blue color that they exude makes them the perfect stone for royal jewelry.

Much has been said abut the Queen, but one thing that can be seen from the way she celebrated her significant anniversary is that she is on the shy side and not especially showy. She prefers to celebrate her own way and have people wonder why she isn’t making more of a fuss rather than celebrate yet another royal anniversary loudly and publicly. But her jewelry choices were nothing short of royally brilliant!
