Is There a Wrong Way to Wear Jewelry?

Jewelry exists to enhance our looks and our beauty. That’s why we buy it, and that’s why we wear it. If accessorizing with jewels is nothing but positive, does that mean there is no wrong way to wear jewelry? With the massive selection of jewelry out there, from classic precious jewelry to large and bold statement pieces and everything in between, there are certainly looks that are just not right. Here is how to avoid making jewelry mistakes and how not to wear your jewelry.

1) Do Not Overdo It

Accessorizing can be fun. So much fun that you feel like wearing several necklaces, bracelets, rings, and a pair of earrings. You might even throw in a brooch for fun. Don’t. Jewelry is meant to complement our outfit, or to create it if we’re talking about statement pieces. It is not intended to confuse and create chaos. Therefore, when selecting jewelry, keep it simple and do not overdo it. If you are going with a number of delicate pieces, go for it, but make sure the pieces match and do not clash. When choosing a statement piece such as a chunky bib necklace, make sure your earrings are as simple as can be, if you decide to wear any at all. Similarly, if you want to flash that bold cocktail ring, keep your wrists bare. Wearing any bracelet really will take away from the statement your ring is making and will be overkill.

2) Do Not Mix Styles or Patterns

Every piece of jewelry needs to work with your outfit. So, if you are wearing a very busy dress, go with simple jewels like delicate gold or silver jewelry, for example, with minimal diamonds if you would like. If, however, you are going for a neutral look whether it is a little black dress, a tan-colored pantsuit, or jeans and a white t-shirt, you are welcome to add color and pizazz. Make sure that it works with the style of your attire. A pantsuit screams “no nonsense” so choose something that makes a statement but that is conservative. A vintage or floral piece can complement a feminine dress or outfit while colorful beads can be the perfect matches for something with more of a bohemian flare.

3) Don’t Wear Collared Shirts with Statement Necklaces

Statement necklaces need to do just that: make a statement. They can’t accomplish this if they are worn on top of a collared shirt, a halter-top, or a shirt that has frills near the collar. Go for V-necks, off the shoulder dresses, sleeveless shirts, and strapless getups. Alternatively, a round-necked top that aligns with your necklace can work as well.

4) Don’t Wear Large Bracelets with Baggy Sleeves

When wearing a large statement bracelet, remember that it is the star of the show. This is only possible if your arm is bare or if you are wearing a very fitted long sleeved shirt that can allow your bracelets to be seen and glide seamlessly up and down your arm. Remember to wear one bracelet at a time, and only on one arm. If you opt for bangles, keep it to a maximum of 6 bangles worn on one arm. Make sure the bangles coordinate with one another.

5) Don’t Wear Nail Polish that Clashes with Your Cocktail Ring

Large cocktail rings demand attention. This is less possible when your glittery nails are stealing the show. Make sure your nails are polished neutrally and that they don’t clash with the color or style of your ring.

The common theme here for wearing your jewelry the wrong way is by overdoing it and not paying attention to the whole picture. Take everything you are wearing into consideration, including the style and color of your clothing, and of course your other accessories. Don’t forget to keep your venue in mind as well. A stunning but loud necklace may not be the right choice for a corporate meeting, even if it is worn with a conservative suit. Play around with your jewelry pieces and outfits and experiment. Part of discovering what’s wrong and what doesn’t work is by trying it once.
