Super Bowl season is here, and with it comes a great deal of chanting, cheering, snacking, and intense-football watching! However, at the end of the big day, a sterling silver trophy, fully equipped with a sterling silver regulation-sized football replica on top, is handed to the winning team. Super Bowl XLVIII will be taking place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ with the Denver Broncos playing against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Trophy
The trophy awarded to the winning team of the Super Bowl each year is called the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the former coach of the Green Bay Packers, who won the first two Super Bowls. Using silversmith techniques such as spinning, chasing, polishing, and hand engraving, expert artisans at Tiffany & Co. masterfully construct the trophy entirely from sterling silver.
The Process
It takes several skilled craftsmen and approximately four months to complete the impressive 22-inch tall trophy. Ever since 1967, the trophies have been made in New Jersey. Recently, the creation has been taking place in the Tiffany & Co. workshop in Parsippany, NJ, just thirty minutes from the stadium. Former Tiffany & Co. Vice President, Oscar Riedener, sketched the trophy’s original basic design while in a meeting with the previous NFL commissioner, Pete Rozelle.
Awarding the Trophy
As soon as the clock hits triple-zero and the winning team is announced, the stunning trophy is finally passed around to each member of the team. However, it won’t be long before the luxurious award is pulled from their arms and sent off to be hand engraved with the team’s name on the trophy’s base.
Additional Parsippany Trophies
In addition to the dazzling silver Super Bowl trophy, the Pete Rozelle Trophy, which is presented to the Super Bowl’s most valuable player, will be put on display. The trophy is named after Pete Rozelle, the NFL’s commissioner who was largely responsible for increasing the awareness of football and the wonderful sport that it is!
The magnificent and sophisticated Vince Lombardi Trophy is a beautiful relflection of the toil and hard work that that a team requires to make it all the way to the Super Bowl. The trophy a true work of art, and its creation by the renowned Tiffany & Co., widely known for its beautiful yellow diamonds as well as their many other luxurious jewelry items, is truly fitting for this honor.
